The weather in Provence is characterised by its many hours of sunshine. Provence enjoys a very pleasant climate all year round. The winters are mild and the sun shines approximately 6 hours a day, with average temperatures in January remaining at a surprising 7C. Dining outdoors in winter is not unheard of. In the summer there is an average of 12 hours sunshine a day, with temperatures averaging 22C. On hot summer days we are often pleasantly surprised by the cooling “mistral” breeze. The climate in spring and autumn is very suitable for outdoor living.

The nearest shops to the house are 3 km away in Le Thoronet. When you get to the T-junction at Le Thoronet, turn right. About 100m up on the left-hand side is a new complex of small shops. There is one small supermarket/mini market, a butcher and a baker amongst others. The minimarket is open on a Sunday morning, which is very rare - most shops in the area are closed on Sundays.

Lorgues, 6km from the house, has a “Casino” supermarket (straight across the roundabout when you come into Lorgues from the direction of the house) and an Intermarché (on the road south out of Lorgues towards Les Arcs). Casino is now open on Sunday mornings during the high season. In the centre of
Lorgues, you will find a small selection of shops, including a Pharmacy, a delicatessen, a small stationers/bookshop, a tabac and quite a few cafés.

The nearest hypermarché/large supermarket is E. Leclerc in Le Luc, about 20 minutes away by car, on the road towards Hyères and Toulon. In this complex you will also find a pharmacy, laundrette and tabac.

In Provence there are daily morning  markets, which  are very popular. If you want to visit them, it is best to go early when it is less crowded. At the markets you will find regional Provençal products such as tablecloths, honey, vinegar, olive oil etc. The spices and vegetables are often displayed as true works of art.
The market in Lorgues on Tuesday morning is one of the biggest markets in the Var and is highly recommended. Below is a brief summary of the different markets in Var:

Monday: Flayosc
Tuesday: Lorgues, Cotignac & Figanières
Wednesday: Carcès, Draguignan, Salernes
& Vidauban
Thursday: Les Arcs, Le Muy, Villecroze & Bargemon
Friday: Le Luc, Entrecasteaux & La Motte
Saturday: Draguignan,Tourtour, Aups, Callas & Carcès
Sunday: Le Muy, Salernes, Taradeau & Vidauban

The Flea market is every fourth Sunday of the month in
Flayosc.

The “Vide Greniers”, the well known antique and second-hand markets are announced during the season with little signs next to the main roads.

In every tourist office they also keep a calendar of the monthly events.

This fine old Cistercian abbey is located west of Le Thoronet and only about 10-15 minutes from the house. The abbey was started by Cistercian monks who moved here from the Mazan Abbey in the Ardèche (after a stay in the Florège River valley near Tourtour, about 20 km to the north) around 1140. The abbey buildings, church and cloisters were built in 1160-1190. In the 14th century, religious wars and politics resulted in the abbey being abandoned. It wasn't until the eighteenth century that the abbey started to be used again, and then during the French Revolution it was sold off and abandoned again. In the 1850's, the state bought the abbey and began rebuilding it. The rebuilding has continued, slowly, until the present day. There is an entrance fee to visit, which allows you to roam freely inside or join a guided tour. The abbey is all stone, and includes a church, adjoining chapter house, dormitory and store room, and cloisters. The church is built of stone blocks, cut and assembled by hand, without the use of cement
This immense and magnificent canyon straddles the départements of Var and the Alpes de Hautes Provence. The gigantic cliffs of calcareous rock are the result of the erosion of the Verdon river. In the midst of a nature reserve, rich in flora and fauna, the scenery here is astonishing. Never really discovered until the beginning of the century, the Verdon Gorges have since then fascinated innumerable visitors. There is no doubt that the sight is imposing! The custodial villages nestled at the foot of the fault have maintained their old fashioned Provençal appeal. Here you will be warmly welcomed and, thanks to the fabulous natural resources of the area, countless activities are available: white water rafting, canyoning, kayaking, sailing, water skiing, fishing. paragliding, free flight, gliding. Also possible are climbing, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking. The Regional Park of Verdon (Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon) was officially set up in March 1997. It includes 43 towns of the two départements and spreads out over nearly 178,000 ha.
For the more energetic and adventurous amongst you you can enjoy a fun day out on a kayak tour along the Argens River, not far from the house on the route de Carces.
The mountains of the Alpes Maritimes – enjoy hiking in summer or skiing in winter. The nearest ski resorts to the house are Gréolières les Neiges, north of Draguignan and just under 2 hours drive away; and Isola 2000 and Auron, about 2.5 hours drive from the house.

The small ski resort of Gréolières les Neiges is situated in the Alpes Maritimes département in the Southern Alps. The lift- served area extends from1400 metres to 1800 metres. There are 9 Green runs, 3 Blue, 15 Red and 3 Black. The resort is located just 45 km from Antibes and Nice and is just 20km from the coast. The proximity of the Mediterranean sea means that the season is shorter than other local resorts such as Isola 2000, but 7 pistes are covered by snow canons ensuring a Christmas opening. The slopes are situated on a north facing bowl which means the pistes can get quite hard and are in shadow by the early afternoon.

Isola 2000 is the closest high resort to the Côte d' Azur. The drive to Isola 2000 from Nice is a spectacular one that winds up through the steep river gorges of the Alpes Maritimes and takes just one and a half hours. Purpose-built in the 1970s, Isola 2000 has tried hard to lessen the ugliness of its ill-conceived concrete buildings by cladding many with wood and newer buildings are mostly traditional chalets in the pine forests above Hameau. The terrain is varied and is especially good for beginners and intermediates with a respectable 120km of piste and some challenging wooded off-piste runs for snowboarders and advanced skiers after new snow. Being located so close to the sea and above 1800m, Isola 2000 gets the brunt of the snowfall from storm systems moving into the Western Med and can often have very different conditions to the rest of the Alps. Early in the season, Isola 2000 tends to be more snow-sure than higher resorts further north but being so close to Nice means that it can get very busy at weekends and holidays.

Auron is located above the Tinée Valley near the town of Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée.  Instead of turning off at the village of Isola, which you do to get to Isola 2000, you carry on up the valley for Auron.  Auron is a more traditional ski resort with 135km of ski runs, at an elevation of 1600m to 2450m.  It has 42 pistes spread out over 4 different areas.  The resort is part of the Stations du Mercantour group, along with Isola 2000 and St. Dalmas.
